Backcountry Skiing

Just the thought of fresh snow is enough to excite most skiers. Now imagine the solitude of a winter night, the sky blanketed in endless stars—this is backcountry skiing.

Living and traveling in this wild environment requires new skills and offers new challenges. To be a competent backcountry winter traveler, you’ll need a strong foundation in avalanche education.

We will teach you the skills and put you in terrain where you need to make real decisions. This course is also excellent preparation for any big mountain expedition where snow and cold are everyday factors.

You’ll start with two days of telemark instruction at Grand Targhee Resort before heading into the backcountry with a pack and sled, where the snow is deep, the tracks are few, and a lifetime of winter fun is about to begin.

Backcountry Skiing Workshop Sec. 1

This course covers the basics of backcountry ski travel and winter safety aspects of recreating in the cold. Included is an introduction to using the Telemark turn in the backcountry. The class is an all-day trip to Cameron Pass area and includes tips on using ski skins, avoiding avalanche danger, judging snow conditions, and how to apply "Telemarking" to snow conditions in the backcountry.

Important note: this is not a “learn to skiclass, participants must be competent basic skiers or better.

The class consists of one “drylandevening session. The evening session will cover equipment fitting, clothing, technique, and safety considerations. OAP will provide students with Telemark ski equipment and climbing skins, available on a first-come basis.

Backcountry Skiing: Basics

If you are able to ski the “more difficulttrails at most nordic ski centers you’ll enjoy this two-day introduction to the world of backcountry skiing.

We start out by discussing the various types of equipment and clothing suitable for the backcountry and then we’re off for a tour. We’ll work on your stride, aiming for efficiency, not speed, and your climbing technique, again looking for maximum return for minimum effort. Without resorting to advanced turns we will show you a few tricks to help you control your speed and direction on the downhill sections.

The second day’s tour will be longer and we’ll place particular emphasis on maintaining control while skiing downhill on the narrow winding trails common to the East’s forested mountains. You can expect to learn the “power wedgefor speed control and the telemark position for fore and aft stability.
