Backpacking and MountaineeringIntroductory Hikes along gentle trails to campsites within close proximity to the Lodge provide students with a gentle introduction to backpacking. Rogers Ridge and Camp One offer spectacular views with minimal effort.
Easy to Strenuous Hikes on the well-maintained trails of Strathcona Provincial Park take students into the true wilderness of Vancouver Island. Trails follow rivers and ridges and can lead groups through old-growth forests, alpine tundra and glacier-fed lakes. The Elk River Trail and Bedwell Trails are two of the more popular hiking choices.
Mountaineering Expeditions can climb to over 2000 metres, offering students incredible vistas of the peaks and lakes of surrounding Strathcona Provincial Park. These trips are more strenuous and require two or more days of hiking. Kings Peak, Mt. Myra and Mt. McBride are a few of the options available for the students to climb. Scandinavian BackpackingThis 30-day exploratory backpacking course will take you north into the remote regions of Arctic Norway and Sweden.
You will go where no NOLS student has gone before. With the expert guidance of your instructors, you’ll learn to travel and camp in areas such as Tromsø, Finnmark, or Lyngen.
Inhabited since the end of the ice age, the region’s indigenous culture is the Sami, with more modern Scandinavian roots reaching back to the migrations of the Vikings during the late 800s. All the while you’re immersed in this unique place rich in culture and wilderness, you will also be immersed in the NOLS core curriculum—honing your leadership skills, backcountry cooking savvy, and Leave No Trace ethics.

Scandinavian Sea Kayaking and BackpackingThe Kingdom of Norway is the westernmost country of the Scandinavian Peninsula in Europe. Your trekking will start in Norway at fjord level and move to higher elevations that are remarkably unspoiled.
A mix of rolling hills and snow-covered peaks punctuated by glaciers, this area has been home to the Sami peoples for hundreds of years. Sea kayaking this impressive coastline offers a mix of remote paddling without any human encounters and days where you can purchase fresh food in the small fishing communities that dot the rugged shores.
The Norwegian Sea has a rich marine life, abundant with cod, herring, and halibut, and is home to the largest deepwater coral reef in the world.
