This first course provides a sound grounding in networking, emphasising the Physical, Data Link and Network Layers of the OSI Model. It examines the problems of providing a physical local area network, introduces a range of data communications equipment and addresses the problems of message delivery through a network. A range of upper layer topics are also introduced.

The Major topic covered are:

Computing Basics and network design

The OSI Model

Local Area Networks

IP Addressing including Subnet Masks

Networking Device Basics (Hubs, Switches, Bridges, Routers)

A structured cabling project

Course Objectives:

On successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:>

Understand the Open Systems Interconnection(OSI) seven layer reference model for communication and the TCP/IP protocol stack

Be familiar with network equipment and techniques

Understand physical Media Access Control(MAC) and logical (IP) addressing and some network routing techniques

Be familiar with some TCP/IP protocols

Identify a range of upper layer issues, and their relationship with the other layers

Be aware of a range of Physical/Data Link/Network Layer problems

Appreciate the troubleshooting process and be able to do simple fault finding

Be able to establish a small LAN as part of a wide area network

To meet the CCNA certification skill level, you must be able to understand or do the following:

Install, configure, and operate simple-routed LAN, routed WAN, and switched Virtual LAN (VLAN) networks.
o

Understand and be able to configure IP, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF, serial interfaces, Frame Relay, IP RIP, VLANs, Ethernet, and access lists.
o

Install and/or configure a network.
o

Optimize WAN through Internet-access solutions that reduce bandwidth and WAN costs, using features such as filtering with access lists, bandwidth on demand (BOD), and dial-on-demand routing (DDR).

The student will learn to configure Cisco switches and routers in an IP inter network. Through lectures, discussions, demonstrations, exercises, and laboratory projects, students are given information sufficient to identify and recommend the best Cisco solutions for small to medium-sized businesses.
