CHINESE CULTURE AND CHINESE OPERA This course is a series of lectures on Chinese Opera (Xiqu), and an introduction to Chinese culture by Master Teacher Lu Suossen from the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts/ NACTA (Beijing).
This course will provide a history of Chinese Opera (Xiqu) and will examine the aspects of performance (singing, reciting, acting, martial arts, dancing and the particularity of training). The course will look at the conventions of the stage performance: the different types of roles and characters, costumes, facial designs and facial make-up. The music in Xiqu will also be examined. The course will draw comparisons between Xiqu and other kinds of theatre and art forms. Also, the present situation of production and of directors of Xiqu (Chinese Opera) will be examined.
The lectures will be in Mandarin with translation in English and French (to be confirmed).
The lectures will be held in Fall 2008 on Fridays from 1pm to 4pm at t he Montreal Chinese Community and Cultural Centre, 1088 Clark St, Montreal Quebec.
