Using the text Athenaze (Book I, up to chapter 16) and with an emphasis on grammatical structures and graded readings from Greek authors, this course will enable students who have completed Classical Greek for Beginners (or those with equivalent skills) to continue their studies in the language.

These courses provide an ideal opportunity to learn Classical Greek from scratch (module 1). They are also suitable if you would like to study New Testament Greek at a later stage. Based on Reading Greek (2 vols., CUP) from section 1A.

What is the course about?
The course aims to enable students to read straightforward Greek prose by gaining a knowledge of basic grammatical structures.

What level is the course?
This is a course for complete beginners although those who have some previous knowledge of Greek may wish to join for revision purposes. The course is also suitable for those who want to go on to read New Testament Greek. It would be helpful if students had already learnt the Greek alphabet.

What will the course cover? (contents,themes,projects)
We shall be using the textbook Reading Greek (2 vols), a textbook designed for adult beginners, based on original Greek sources. Students will read adapted passages from works by Plato, Herodotus, Aristophanes etc. Reading will be combined with grammar instruction and grammatical exercises. We shall be studying the conjugation of verbs, the declension of nouns and adjectives, etc.

What can I expect to achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to:
demonstrate some knowledge of the structure of Greek
have some insight into the derivation of English words
have some insight into the world of ancient Greece
