International Criminal Law

The course will trace the historical origins of international criminal law and its sources, and its development through the jurisprudence of various international criminal tribunals, from Nuremberg to the International Criminal Court in The Hague. The course will also consider the applications and boundaries of international criminal law, and its relationship with international politics. The mechanics of an international criminal trial will be examined, together with aspects of practice and procedure, including the rules of evidence.

This course will introduce the basic concepts, terminology, history and legislation regarding the practice of Criminal Law in Canada. Major emphasis will be put on the Criminal Code of Canada and its impact on society, as well as Criminal Law reform. Students will examine the criminal court system as it relates to adult and youth crime, as well as types of crime, defenses available to the accused, sentencing, and the correctional system.

Designed for those wishing to enhance skills and gain university qualifications in prosecution roles and functions and suited to personnel currently in police forces or performing prosecutorial functions. Students are equipped with substantive knowledge and skills to perform prosecution functions and further develop advocacy competency.

Students are introduced to the principles and administration of criminal law using the Criminal code of Canada including procedures from arrest through trial, sentencing, punishment and appeals. Definitions and elements of crimes are explained, including crimes against a person and against property.
