Diploma in Educational Psychology

Educational Psychology focuses on the study of learning achievements and strategy, pupil attributes, and instructional processes directly related to that of the classroom and the school, such as amount of instructional time or individual differences in school learning. An educational psychologist helps gather information for teachers and parents when students have academic or behavioural problems. They assist by evaluating a pupils thinking abilities and assessing individual strengths and weaknesses. Together, the parents, teachers, and educational psychologist help to formulate plans to help students learn more effectively. Educational psychologists work mostly in elementary and secondary schools. They also may work in other settings such as colleges, consulting organizations, corporations, industry and religious institutions.

COURSE OBJECTIVE

This course is designed to acquaint students with selected psychological concepts and learning theories, and their critical applications to educational practices, issues and problems. The role of psychology of education in studying and influencing teaching and learning will be explored with an emphasis on direct application to planning, implementing, and evaluating instructions in classrooms. Students will develop their skills for teaching and an understanding of developing motivation for learners.

PROGRAMME CONTENTS

EP 101 - Introductory Psychology
To familiarize the student with the various principles and theoretical structures within psychology that leads towards educational perspectives.

EP 102 - Principles of Psychology of Learning
This module will provide students with an understanding of learning through conditioning and memory faculties leading cognition and emotions..

EP 103 - Aspects of Education
To explore the theories and principles in the field of education - emphasis on learning, motivation, and memory. and classroom management.

EP 104 - Introduction to Motivation and Intelligence
This module will concentrate on the theories related to motivation, the different views on motivation, concept of intelligence ?and emotional intelligence.

EP 201 - Psychology of Education A Social Perspective
This module provides coverage on the core area of social psychology and the advanced option of educational psychology. Topics to be explored include bullying, circle-time, self-esteem, and pastoral care. Learning will be assessed through psychology applied learning scenarios (PALS).

EP 202 - Special Educational Needs
This module emphasizes on individual differences and the advanced option of educational psychology. Theoretical and practical issues relating to effective provision for children identified as having special educational needs will be considered. Learning will be reinforced with cases studies.

EP 203 - Curriculum and Instruction
This module develops students to understand and enact the principles of curriculum design, teaching, and assessment of learning, as they apply to the contexts and issues educational psychologists are likely to meet. A systemic view of children’s learning problems will be emphasized. Curriculum and instructional issues for both mainstream and special schools especially in Singapore will be reviewed.

EP 204 - Professionalism and Ethics
This module prepares students for the practice of professional psychology by examining the organization of professional services as well as ethical and legal considerations that govern the practice of psychology. Ethical and legal guidelines pertinent to the delivery of school psychological services will be introduced and students will be prepared to make well-informed choices in resolving professional problems and ethical dilemmas when they occur

EP 205 - Adult Education
This module prepare students for administrative and teaching roles in the areas of non-formal (Adult) Life Long Learning ?Androgogy 朼n extension to Human Resources Development. It provides with theoretical and practical knowledge in Non-Formal Education which will enable them to become more competent in their contribution to national development.

EP 206 - Educational Leadership
This module examines transformational leadership and its application to education by introducing Bass and Aviolo’s model of the Full Range of Leadership, which includes both transactional and transformational leadership scenarios. Through examination of this model, evaluates the "fit" of transformational leadership in educational settings.
