TOEFL

The course offered at Synergy is designed to prepare ESL students for enrolling into a Canadian University or College, as the TOEFL Test (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a required entrance exam taken by every international student wanting to study in a Canadian post-secondary institution. In our TOEFL course, you will study TOEFL material, have access to practice Computer Based Tests (CBT) both in class and outside of class, and learn the skills needed to complete the TOEFL exam successfully. In this class, we use a variety of different materials to aid you in developing the skills you will need to succeed in your academic life. Homework is assigned in this class as a means for you to review and practice the skills you have studied during the class. Students will study a number of different skills:

Listening comprehension

TOEIC Preparation

Duration: 4 weeks

The course offered at Synergy is an intensive preparation course for the TOEIC Test (Test of English for International Communication). The Course is useful for students who plan to use English in their working life. The TOEIC Test focuses on the English used in the various aspects of the business world. In our TOEIC Course, you will have the chance to practice with TOEIC materials; you will also learn the strategies and skills necessary to succeed on the exam. The College uses a variety of materials to ensure that you have a greater understanding and a chance to practice at different levels. Homework is assigned in this class as a means for you to review and practice the skills you have studied during the class. You will study a number of different skills such as:

College English for ESL Students - Reading and Writing

The courses mentioned below are specifically designed to help ESL students improve their reading and writing skills. Revisions of important grammatical points are stressed to improve the students writing skills. The intention of the courses is to prepare the ESL students for college level essay writing.

ESL Reading and Writing I
This course is designed to begin to develop ESL students’ reading skills using materials adapted for ESL students’ needs. Skills practiced in this course include reading to perceive general overall meaning, using context clues, skimming and scanning, identifying topic sentences, and identifying main ideas. The second intent is to develop students’ writing skills with emphasis on proper phrase and sentence structure and paragraph development.

ESL Reading and Writing II
The intent of this course is to extend ESL students’ basic reading skills using increasingly sophisticated materials. Skills practiced in this course include inference, critical analysis, and evaluation. The second intent is to further develop students’ writing skills with emphasis on paragraph and essay development.

ESL Reading and Writing III
The intent of this course is to give students the opportunity to develop their reading skills with authentic reading materials in preparation for academic study. The second intent is to further develop students’ writing skills with emphasis on expository academic writing of the type they will have to produce in mainstream college courses.

College English for ESL Students - Composition

These courses are specifically designed to help ESL students improve their Composition. Revisions of important grammatical points and paragraph structures are stressed to improve the students writing skills. The intention of the courses is to prepare the ESL students for college level writing

Developmental English
This course is a study and practice of the basic concepts of composition, including paragraph and essay construction. It introduces students to the composition process: prewriting, writing, and revising. The course also emphasizes grammar, sentence mechanics, editing, and critical thinking skills. Placement in this course is based on a minimum proficiency test score and a departmental writing sample.

English Composition I
This course emphasizes the process and strategies of writing with critical attention to purpose, audience, and style. Students write analytical essays based on readings, observations, and ideas; develop their inventiveness and voice; and edit for style and conventions of standard usage. This course introduces Modern Language Association (MLA) format.

English Composition II
This course furthers the composition skills developed in English Composition 1, focusing on critical reading, writing, and research. Students will write expository and persuasive essays, using literary and/or interdisciplinary materials. This course also requires a researched essay.
Prerequisite: English Composition I
