Elementary French

A continuation of XL 1, this course emphasizes past and future verb tenses, commands, object pronouns, idiomatic expressions, and the expansion of cultural vocabulary using a communicative, thematically based approach.

Essentials of French grammar. Though all assignments and examinations are written, oral practice is provided through the use of a CD. Students also submit oral exercises to the instructor via voicemail. Prerequisites: 101: none or a score of 0-14 on UW Placement test. 102: C grade in FRENCH 101 or score of 15-30 on UW Placement test. 103: C grade in FRENCH 102 or score of 31-106 on UW Placement test. Written permission from instructor allows enrollment in these courses.

This course is a first year college "Cours Pratiques" in French grammar and writing practice for beginners and students with up to two years of high school French or one year of college French. It is designed to give a basic foundation in French vocabulary, grammar, reading, phonetics, conversation and laboratory practice. Includes a Phonetics lab.

By the end of this course, you will be expected to:

use the four skills �speaking, understanding, reading, and writing in elementary French.
gain an appreciation for French culture.
conduct an elementary conversation with a partner using French. You will ask questions and use a variety of vocabulary.
discuss events in the present, past, and future tenses.
write sentences and brief paragraphs about given subjects.
read and understand the reading selections. You will often answer questions about the reading selections.
share French culture and realia with the class. Perhaps you want to prepare some French food, discuss a French painting, or discuss the Euro?
