This course begins a program of three courses (XL 1, XL 2, XL 3) covering first year college level Spanish. Using a communicative integrated skills approach, the program simultaneously develops speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Reading and writing activities provide opportunities to practice key grammatical structures, acquire vocabulary, and develop cultural insights. Instruction emphasizes the present tense of regular and major irregular verbs and the building of a basic conversational vocabulary.

Online learning series allows beginning language students to hear Spanish and experience its cultural diversity. Students use voice mail to communicate with their instructor. Elementary Spanish

Pronounciation and fundamental grammatical structure in the language are introduced in both classroom and laboratory drills. Emphasis is on development of the language skills. Student will learn daily Spanish to satisfy routine travel needs and minimum courtesy requirements, ask questions and give answers on topics familiar to them while using the present indicative with both regular and irregular verbs, the present progressive, the preterit with regular verbs, ser, estar and ir and direct and indirect complementary pronouns. Course activities will include "Conversation", dicussion of short cultural readings, dramatizations of dialogues, situational role playing, transformation drills, oral and written exams. Class uses a variety of materials, but the main textbook is: Espanol A Lo Vivo, by Wilkins and Larson. Units 1- 5.

Elementary Spanish 1 is basic Spanish for students with little or no knowledge of the language. The course provides a solid foundation in the four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking, as well as in grammar. Prerequisite: exemption/completion of READ-091. Three hours lecture each week. Three credits. Three billable hours.

increase their knowledge of the cultural differences of Spanish-speaking people.
be able to communicate in exchanging meaningful dialogue, using grammatical structures and vocabulary to attain better oral proficiency.
refine accuracy of pronunciation skills using the Spanish language.
be able to read and comprehend cultural reading selections appropriate to the elementary level.
be able to write comprehensive paragraphs and descriptions on given topics demonstrating increased improvement in writing ability.
