This course will introduce students to the concepts and tools of financial management. The focus of the course is decision making in a financial context. It therefore examines the techniques that are used in businesses to make decisions that are consistent with the efforts to increase the wealth of the owners of the business in a corporate environment. The topics covered include but not limited to the valuation of future cash flows, the valuation of stocks and bonds, capital budgeting, risk and return and long term financing. The course consists of core modules and program specific modules for each postgraduate program if applicable.

Financial Management

This course provides non-financial people with the skills to make financial operating, investing and funding decisions. The course uses 5 case studies to demonstrate how to manage the financial resources in an organisation.

The operating decisions focus on cash management, receivables collection and inventory control.

The investing decisions are demonstrated using discounted cash flow techniques. Company valuation and franchising examples are used to illustrate these techniques.

The funding decisions are based on accessing sources of debt, private equity and public equity. The advantages and disadvantages of each type of funding are presented.

Course Objectives

Effective techniques for controlling cash, accounts receivable, inventory and accounts payable are presented.

A cash management tool is used to demonstrate how organisations can run into liquidity problems in periods of rapid growth. Different corrective actions to ease the cash crisis are examined.

Financial investment decisions are made using discounted cash flow techniques.

Valuation techniques are explored when buying or selling a business.

The sources of debt, private equity and public equity financing are identified and compared.
