Linux Systems Administration Most systems administrators will be exposed to Linux systems at some point in their career, as they have an important role in the server market and internet infrastucture. This course allows participants to learn principles and techniques for managing networked Linux systems, with particular emphasis on Internet services such as web servers and email servers. This course builds upon the content of the "Fundamentals of Unix" course but focuses on systems administration rather than programming. This course also prepares the participant for the Linux Professional Institute Certification (LPIC) Level 1 exams 117-101 and 117-102
Course Outline
The major topics covered are:
Introduction to Linux servers, including system startup, installation and maintenance
Routine system administration tasks, including user account management, file management and backups
Networking configuration and basic network services
Linux system-level services, such as networked file systems and DNS
Linux e-mail services
Linux web servers
X Windows configuration, printing services and documentation
System security
Course Objectives
At the end of this short course the student will be able to:
Explain the general concepts of Linux servers , including location of system software, disk partition layout and location of configuration files.
Perform routine system administration tasks, such as user account management, system monitoring and backups.
Configure basic networking parameters for a Linux system.
Set up networked services for a small network, such as networked file systems and networked information systems.
Install and administer Internet services, including a web server, and an email server.
Describe and apply knowledge of security in a networked Linux environment.
Understand the importance of maintaining system documentation.

Fundamentals of Unix (Solaris and Linux)This course teaches you how to use Linux and Solaris operating systems and introduces you to the GNOME graphical user interface (GUI). You will learn fundamental command-line features of Linux and Solaris including file system navigation, changing file permission, the vi text editor, Korn and Bash shell features and basic network use. GUI features include configuring the desktop, file managers and GUI text editors. This course teaches you how to use the Linux and Solaris operating systems and introduces you to the GNOME graphical user interface (GUI). The class is for new users of the Linux and Solaris operating systems. You will learn fundamental command-line features of Linux and Solaris including file system navigation, changing file permissions, the vi text editor, Korn and Bash shell features, and basic network use.
