Literature and Materials of Music An introductory course to the Literature and Materials sequence. Students will learn the elements of music and prepare the foundation for materials discussed in later L&M classes. These include notation, symbols, names of notes through fixed-do solfège, clefs, key signatures, scales, major and all three minor scales, modal scales, intervals, triads, and seventh chords, as well as an introduction to four-part harmony and analysis. Concepts of modulation and basic structures of music may also be discussed. The students will be introduced to the reading of simple scores and apply basic skills learned in class through discussion and analysis. This class will require extensive outside preparation in the completion of weekly assignments in order for the student to master the skills necessary to continue in the L&M sequence A Classroom course provided by The Juilliard School in New York City, New York, United States
