The Postgraduate Certificate in Nursing Education develops this role and relates it to all settings where nurses teach. The purpose of this graduate certificate is to provide a theoretical and practical foundation in nursing education for Masters Prepared nurses who wish to assume the role of nursing faculty in an associate or baccalaureate degree nursing program. This certificate will provide the opportunity to acquire some of the basic skills utilized by the nurse educator.

This certificate can also be used to target BSN prepared nurses who may be teaching in a community college setting by exception (faculty hired without required credentials due to a lack of qualified faculty) and desire career mobility to attain a faculty position in that same setting. The certificate can serve as the first step toward the MSN degree, thus providing a ladder into graduate programming for BSN nurses. This certificate provides 12 credits of focused coursework in the areas of learning theory, cognition, curriculum and instructional design, and evaluation nursing education programs. The 12 credits of this certificate also comprise the nursing education specialty concentration for the MSN degree.

Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the Nursing Education Certificate, you must be a graduate of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher, hold a current RN license and submit a written goal statement along with the application form.

This online Master of Science in Nursing degree with a concentration in nursing education prepares nurses to teach patients and families, nursing students, nursing staff and health maintenance consumers. Through specialized course work, students gain necessary teaching skills to prepare them to become nurse educators, a complex role that requires high levels of pedagogical and clinical competency. The nursing education track requires students to complete 14 credits in nursing education as well as required MSN program and clinical core courses.

Although the program is offered online, certain courses require a one week campus visit in the fall.

This program is based upon and consistent with the mission and philosophy of Duquesne University. The Master of Science in Nursing degree requirements can be completed on a full-time (6 credits per semester) or part-time basis. After being accepted for admission to the MSN program, each student is assigned a faculty advisor who will assist the student in completion of a Program Plan. Students have up to six years to complete the program.

Qualifications for the Certificate in Nursing Education include:
Interview with Program Coordinator
Statement of professional goals
Connecticut RN license
Basic Health Assessment course (30 hours or greater)
Applicants for the Certificate in Nursing Education must submit the following application materials to the Office of Graduate Admissions:

Graduate application form and a non-refundable application fee
Two letters of recommendation
Official transcript(s) from all colleges and universities previously attended
Current resume
Copy of current RN license
Admission to the Certificate in Nursing Education is offered on a rolling basis throughout the year.
