Mountain Journey A journey to bring together all skills and attitudes learned in the mountains. Students will be tasked with planning and preparation necessary in achieving a suitable objective. Rotated leadership, ascent of a peak, emphasis on minimal impact camping, group dynamics, leadership skills and responsibilities. Snow and Glacier TravelWeather permitting, a base camp is established and emphasis is placed the acquisition of technical skills. Topics covered: glacier travel technique, moving together in crevassed areas, rope teams of two and three, safety systems (e.g. prussiks), crevasse rescue, ice screw placement, crampon use, alpine hazards, alpine starts, peak experiences.

Mountain TravelFocus on navigation techniques: orienteering (use of map and compass), route finding, estimating distance and time, pacing, contour following, landscape identification, resection, micro-navigation. Also covered: trip preparation and moving safely, group dynamics, leadership responsibilities, minimum impact camping, use of ice axe for braking and cutting steps, and self-belay for moving on steep terrain. Instruction in the use of mountain rope only, with no technical gear - natural belays, use of hand lines, classic rappel and lowering to negotiate steep steps. Avalanche safety, winter camping skills, and snow shoe travel will be covered if conditions require.

Squamish TripAllowing 2 half days for travel. Introduction to rock climbing: following lead climbs, removing protection, complex anchors, multi-pitch rappel and climb, guide book use, designing a teaching session. Rescue techniques for climbers (adapted for climbers and mountaineers): escaping from systems, improvised lowers and raises, climbing a rope, passing a knot through a lowering system.
