This course shows you how to use the PHP scripting language and a web browser to access MySQL databases and tables. Simple and complex queries can be set up through a web page which calls a PHP script to carry out the enquiry. PHP can present the results of the query as a web page. PHP can also be used to provide a web interface to add, delete and edit rows of data in MySQL tables.

The major topics covered are:

The Client Server model and its relationship to PHP and MySQL.

An Introduction to PHP Programming.

PHP data types, variables, arrays and loops

Basic concepts of MySQL - Databases, tables, logging on, logging off

Simple Queries in MySQL.

Using PHP to connect to a MySQL Database

Using forms to pass data to PHP scripts.

Creating and executing simple queries using PHP.

Displaying the results of simple queries.

Creating more complex queries in MySQL.

Creating more complex queries with forms and PHP.

Adding, editing and deleting data in MySQL tables with forms and PHP.

Course Objectives

At the end of this short course the student will be able to:

Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the PHP Scripting Language

Describe how PHP can be used to log on and interact with MySQL databases.

Determine how simple database queries can be constructed using MySQL and PHP.

Design and implement basic and more complex database queries using MySQL and PHP.

Implement the basics of MySQL database tables by adding, changing and deleting data using PHP and HTML forms.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

* Develop PHP scripts that perform decision making and looping tasks
* Develop PHP scripts that integrate with a WWW server, and do the following:
o Handle the processing of GET and POST forms
o Securely produce output that prevents Cross-Site Scripting (CSS) attacks.
o Securely process input from users, to prevent Shell Injection attacks
o Set and retrieve cookies stored on the client web browser
o Securely store and retrieve session information, without placing the information on the client browser (so it cannot be tampered with, and is not visible to the client)
o Dynamically generate web pages as well as pre-populate web forms.
o Create secure web pages that require authentication and are user specific
o Create shopping cart type applications, which store user session information
* Understand how to interact with a database
o Understand basic database concepts
o Design a database schema to store data
o Create and execute queries to store and retrieve data from a databases
o Integrate with back-end databases, using a databases-independent method
* Communicate with a database using PHP
o Integrate with a database server (such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, DB2, Informix, MS SQL Server, etc.) to store and retrieve data
o Interface with DB2 on the IBM iSeries (i5/OS) platform
o Convert user submitted information to ",database safe", information, to prevent SQL Injection attacks
o Perform single-step operations to store and retrieve information from a database
* Work with XML data
o Create RSS aggregators
o Generate dynamic RSS feeds
o Retrieve and parse XML data using PHP
* Send email using PHP
o Send HTML Formatted email messages
o Send text email messages

This course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of the PHP scripting language that is used to dynamically control the presentation of web pages based on user input and data stored on a server. Students learn the basics of SQL using the MySQL database; how to create, access, and manipulate MySQL data from within a PHP program; and how to set up and use HTML forms to gather input from a web page user. File handling also is covered. Special topics include how to handle data in a grid-like (spreadsheet) format in a web page, PHP security, and a brief overview of using AJAX with PHP.
