Students will be able to make templates of court forms, which will lead to creating their own library of accepted samples. The successful graduate will have also achieved competency in the use of popular software programs.

Paralegal

The ability to understand and navigate Canada’s legal system is a skill growing in demand as the face of Canadian society changes. The Paralegal Program at RCC Faculty of General Studies is designed to help graduates fulfill this increasing need by producing graduates equipped with the necessary professionalism, knowledge and skills. Graduates move on to assist clients and act as agents for those who need help with a variety of legal services, either directly or under the supervision of a lawyer.

The rigorous program imparts students with a broad understanding of the Canadian legal system and specific knowledge concerning several major areas of law. After laying the theoretical groundwork for a particular area of law, students are taught ‘real-worldapplications. In this format, students develop confidence and competence in many key skill areas. Whether it be assisting a client to defend against a minor criminal offence, deal with issues concerning immigration, or assist in employer-employee disputes, the skills learned in the Paralegal program will help graduates find an exciting and fulfilling career in the legal service profession.

Each section, or module, of the program contains an element of theory, practice and facilitated discussion to solidify the studentsknowledge. Students undergo a written proficiency evaluation at the completion of each module aimed at reinforcing content comprehension and legal reasoning, using the concepts learned in that particular module.

The program is an intensive educational process that not only fully prepares the student for the paralegal profession but does so by providing a clear and systematic approach to learning. Graduates will not only acquire a sound knowledge of the subject matter, but will have both a theoretical and practical perspective.

The paralegal program is approved by the Public Service Commission of Canada (PSC), and students enrolled in the program (and have satisfied all the prescribed course requirements) may apply for co-op/co-op program with all Canadian Federal organizations. The curriculum has been prepared to reflect the proposed aim of the British Columbia Law Society’s Paralegal Task Force in raising the profile of paralegals in BC. Paralegals assist lawyers in preparing cases. They also carry out administrative functions, and may on occasion undertake preliminary legal research work, under the supervision of a lawyer. This program will help students discover the challenges offered by a career as a paralegal. It will also provide them with more than just legal facts and theories. Indeed, students will have the opportunity to study substantive, procedural, and paralegal skills courses.
