Project Delivery

The use of project delivery methods is rapidly changing the construction industry. Owners want projects delivered faster, at a lower cost, with higher quality, and with greater innovation. The construction process is a complex undertaking that involves many different activities and people in its planning and execution. These tasks, and the roles and responsibilities of the owner, designer, construction manager, contractor(s), subcontractor(s), vendors and suppliers can be organized in numerous ways to deliver a construction project from concept to completion. The choice of project delivery methods has major impact on the success of a project. This course will discuss the types of project delivery; the elements to consider in determining contract delivery methodology and project delivery; project delivery approach & methodology; the construction manager selection process and managing the project delivery process. At the end of this course, you will learn what determines the Right Project Delivery Methodology for Your Project.

o In- class exercise to examine the role/responsibilities of the parties under the contract
* Types of Contracts
o Examination of different types of contracting systems with an analysis of risk/benefit to owner/contractor
* Design Process
* Discussion
o Interpreting the contract documents
o Value Engineering/Value for Money analysis as part of regular design process
o Problematic clause analysis-potential for future claims
o Constructability Review –Who’s Responsibility?
o Liability to the contractor - Exculpatory Clauses
* Project Management Exercise
o What is role and responsibility?
o How impacted by CCDC?
* Adjournment

Day II

* Tendering Process
o Quality Control of Tender Documents (Drawings and Specifications)
o Site Visits
o Amendments to tendering documents - is there a point at which re-tender should be looked at?
o Contractor’s queries - how to handle/organize
o Separate Contracts
o Opening of Tenders
o Award of Contract
* Workshop - Project Problem
o Participants will meet in small groups to discuss and suggest the solution to a case study problem that will be presented (Participants may also define a problem from their experience). A representative from each group will present the solutions to all participants. A discussion will follow.
