The consequences of recognizing a clients risk of suicide is tragic for all involved, from the client and their loved ones to the therapist. Yet according to the American Association of Suicidology, most therapists lack adequate training to recognize and respond to suicide risk. This introduction to treating the suicidal client prepares therapists to identify and manage their own emotional reactions so that they can develop an effective therapeutic alliance. Participants explore and discuss desirable attitudes in the client interview and ways to overcome fear to work effectively with at-risk clients.
