Refrigeration and Air Conditioning

This course is for refrigeration and air conditioning apprentices and others employed in the industry. You will learn to:

�Select, install, commission, maintain, fault-find and repair refrigeration and air conditioning components and systems in domestic, commercial and/or industrial applications.

This qualification meets the NSW Office of Fair Trading´s licensing requirements for issuing "Qualified Supervisor´s Certificate - Refrigeration and/or Air Conditioning". This permits the holder to work unsupervised on refrigeration and/or air conditioning systems and associated electrical work. It also meets the federal Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Regulations 1995 and its 2005 Amendment requirements for the Full Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Licence, which is required to handle a refrigerant for any work in the refrigeration and industry, other than automotive industry.

This qualification provides enabling competencies to design and validate/evaluate refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and systems and provide technical advice.

Build on your existing refrigeration and air conditioning skills and knowledge. This qualification looks in-depth at designing, validating and evaluating refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and systems. With this advanced diploma under your belt, you’ll be able to provide specialist technical advice, seek work as an engineering associate or in areas like facilities management.

Whether you need refrigeration or an air conditioning system installed, serviced, or fully repaired, a refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic can do the job for you. And if it’s a large commercial or industrial cooling system that needs installing, they may need to assemble it first.

A cooling system is made up of many different parts, including a compressor, motor and air filter. Piping may also need to be attached and joints soldered to complete a system. Refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics ensure that each part of a cooling system is correctly positioned, before bolting it down with hand or power tools. They follow design instructions to ensure the parts are in the correct position. Pre-assembled units, usually for cooling domestic premises, just need to be installed by the mechanics.

Refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics also service and repair cooling systems. They regularly fix systems that have come to a halt because of electrical faults.

An understanding of mechanics, as well as good problem-solving ability is important in this occupation. Having an interest in electrical systems and electronic components will also help. During the installation of cooling systems, you’ll often refer to design drawings, so you’ll have to know how to interpret these. Excellent hand-eye coordination and good customer service skills for helping hot and bothered clients will help you prosper in this job.

The Technology Centre at Carlisle Campus is WA’s premier centre for refrigeration, air conditioning and associated studies. The purpose built facility is the finest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Students will train using a range of refrigeration and air conditioning systems, and learn the latest maintenance and servicing techniques. Our lecturers keep close ties with companies in the industry, many of whom sponsor the unit’s own awards ceremony for students, to ensure training is up-to-date and relevant.

This course will provide the learner with practical skills and knowledge used in either Fabrication (Heavy and Light) or Mechanical (Fitter, Metal Machinist/ Fitter and Metal Machinist or Plant Mechanic or Refrigeration Air Conditioning) or Marine Craft Construction or the Electrical/Electronic sectors of the industry. Learners will be able to practice the skills ad knowledge learnt through a structured work placement program and project based delivery outlined in the course structure. Successful completion of the course will give the learner an opportunity to gain an apprenticeship in the relevant trade within the industry sector. AQF levels 1, 2 and 3 units of competence have been used to develop the course so that maximum articulation can occur into a Certificate III Qualification in the stated trade sectors of the Metals and Engineering industry.

In this qualification you will learn in a simulated working environment and be exposed to an industrial setting on work experience. This means starting on time, setting goals, achieving work in a given time frame and working as part of a team.

On completion of the qualification, you will have already completed a significant part of the off-the-job training requirements for a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Apprenticeship.

Note: A colour vision clearance may be required to gain a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Apprenticeship.
