Recent studies demonstrate that nearly half of all Americans are afflicted with sleep disturbances yet few are aware of the potential consequences of sleep deprivation or seek treatment. This six-hour program reviews scientific research on the benefits of healthy sleep and the consequences of poor sleep. The course discusses the bidirectional relationship between sleep disturbances and psychiatric disorders and how psychiatric disorders are affected in specific sleep disturbances, such as sleep disordered breathing, insomnia, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, circadian rhythm disturbances, and parasomnias. Other topics include how prescription medication and over-the-counter supplements impact sleep, how to screen for sleep disorders, and when to refer patients for sleep evaluation. Includes opportunities for Q&A.
