This course equips students with the skills and techniques needed to successfully manage and lead knowledge-based projects of today. In addition to software development, the course deals with projects involving content development, systems development, technology infrastructure, and research. The focus is on modern agile project management techniques and is, therefore, helpful for those who want to learn or transition to agile methodologies; however, traditional project management based on A PMI’s Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge--Fourth Edition also is covered. Instruction is based upon the principles that the management of projects is best driven by processes, rather than by heroic efforts, and that agility and process-orientation should be balanced depending upon the nature of the projects. The CMMI-DEV 1.2 processes are discussed, as well as the techniques of problem analysis, decision analysis, and future problem/opportunity analysis that are an important toolset for any manager.

Project management best practices are essential for organizations in meeting their software development goals and objectives on time and on budget. Many best practices exist that can lower risk, improve the quality of deliverables, and create and support satisfied teams and sponsors. In many organizations, the difficulty lies in determining how to implement these best practices. This course reviews and examines essential project management processes and activities: initiation, planning, estimating, budgeting, scheduling tasks and resources, managing deliverables and project closeout. Learn how to recognize and avoid classic mistakes and understand how methodology, accountability, organization, tools and communication all combine to impact project success or failure.

In this course, students learn the concepts and skills in managing systems and development projects and ensuring its effectiveness and efficiency. Topics include project planning and scheduling, resource allocation, peer and team programming, cost estimation, software maintenance, software analysis, software design, software implementation, software quality, TQM principles and project management tools like network analysis, PERT/CPM and Gantt Charts.
