The UNIX Operating system is supplied with a wealth of tools specifically designed for the programmer/developer. In addition to the basic vi editor and the Shell programming languages, there are tools available to assist a programmer/developer with regards to sorting, editing and control of files. A Pattern Scanning Utility called awk is provided to allow easy manipulation of structured data and the generation of formatted reports. Further tools include the version control facility of the Source Code Control System (SCCS) and the control of dependency relations among files via the make utility.
