This is an introduction to several UNIX tools and techniques: common commands, shells and shell programming, regular expressions, sed, awk, cron, make and a skimming of Perl. Comparisons to Windows will be used to illustrate similarities and differences and to illuminate the UNIX system. This is a lecture course, supported by live demonstrations. The course includes weekly homework assignments, a midterm and final exams. All exams are take-home.

The course is intended for those who want to use UNIX for technical and scientific endeavors.

UNIX Tools and Utilities Workshop

This course provides a solid introduction to many of the day-to-day tools available in the Unix environment. Commands to search for patterns in files, manipulate the contents of files and compare file contents are introduced. Students also write shell scripts and programs utilizing awk and sed programming languages. Numerous exercises and hands-on labs are assigned throughout the course to supplement and reinforce the course lecture.

Prerequisites
Student should have a fundamental understanding of the Unix operating system and its environment before taking this course.
