Classical Music

Revolutions in politics, society, and art shaped a turbulent 18th century. Our class begins with the revolutions in music and musical taste that erupted in the 1720s and ’30s, decades before the death of Baroque’s master composer, J.S. Bach. This intriguing overlap of styles â€?their dialogue and exchange as well as their uneasy, often antagonistic coexistence â€?will be considered. As we move through the mid-century, we will meet the composers who forged the foundations of the new style â€?foundations that ultimately supported the familiar masterpieces of the late 18th century. Over the duration of the course, you will discover many composers whose works include unjustly neglected gems: the Bach sons, the Mannheim composers, Clementi, Dittersdorf, Salieri, and others. Of course, we will not neglect the legacy of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. Topics will include the emergence of new genres (the symphony, string quartet, and opera buffa); opera reform; the impact of the fortepiano; the Classical sonata and concerto; and the Mass and oratorio as concert music. (The ability to read music is not a requirement for this course, but scores will be available during class for score readers. Although not a prerequisite, this course is a continuation of “Baroque Music.â€?

Classical Music

This class is designed for students who have little or no musical background but enjoy classical music and would like to further their enjoyment through an understanding of the basics of musical structure and historical context. By learning how to listen and understand the universal language of music students will be inspired to make classical music an important part of their life.

The class is divided into five weeks as outlined below. Although it is highly recommended that the student have access to a library of classical music tapes or CD`s, each week`s lesson will include listening examples (MIDI samples or links to Mp3 files).

In addition to "grading" and comments at the end of the session, I will be available for e-mail communication throughout the course for those students who may have questions or need additional help. Students will be notified of online Classical Music chat sessions as they are scheduled.
