Objectives
This program will provide training in phlebotomy procedures routinely ordered in a physician’s or clinic office. In addition, graduates will be able to communicate effectively with patients and co-professionals. An A.A.S. degree will provide evidence of competencies in communications, social sciences, humanities and fine arts, analytical and inferential reasoning and computational skills as well as the ability to learn on one’s own.

The M State Phlebotomy Technician program prepares students to properly perform phlebotomy (venipuncture and capillary blood) collection and processing in a professional manner. This program also trains students to become proficient and multi-skilled in point-of-care (bedside) testing, computer and communication skills. Nurse assistant home health aide training enhances the student’s knowledge of patient care and increases his/her marketability in the health care field. Phlebotomy technicians are employed by hospital and clinic labs, insurance companies, donor blood facilities and home health care.

The primary function of a phlebotomy technician is to obtain patient blood specimens by venipuncture or microtechniques. The phlebotomy technician aids in the collection and transportation of other laboratory specimens, and may be involved with patient data entry. A phlebotomy technician also draws blood for transfusions, donations and research. This course provides instruction in the skills needed for the proper collection of blood and other specimens used for diagnostic testing. Emphasis is placed on ethics, legalities, medical terminology, safety and universal precautions, health care delivery systems, patient relations, anatomy and physiology, and specimen collection. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in the theoretical comprehension of phlebotomy techniques. This course will cover the classroom portion only. This 148-hour class is intended for those who have no experience and want to become employed as a Phlebotomy Technician in a clinical laboratory, medical clinic or public health department setting. The course includes 48 hours of classroom training and a 100-hour arranged clinical externship to provide you with a complete learning experience.

This course is certified by the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT). Students are trained to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and precautions. Classes are taught in lecture, student laboratory and through clinical experiences. ASPT certification exam will be administered at the conclusion of the program. Attendance at a pre-admission info session is required.
