The Computed Tomography (CT) Certificate program provides technologists with the knowledge, skills, and competence necessary to become practicing CT technologists. The program is offered through Part Time Studies with the theory courses offered in a distance education format. After completing the 5 theory courses, students are required to complete a 3 month clinical practicum. BCIT has agreements with a number of clinical sites to provide for this experience. Detailed arrangements for the practicum will be arranged on an individual basis.

The Program
The program is a post-diploma advanced specialty certificate consisting of five theory courses in Physics and Instrumentation, Clinical Applications, and Sectional Anatomy, as well as a three-month clinical practicum based on the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) model. The overall goals of the program are to provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to work competently in CT.

MRI Techniques in Radiology

Radiologic Technology

SCC’s Radiologic Technology program teaches the safe use of radiation to produce images of the human body for diagnostic purposes. Students are educated in the skills and knowledge required for critical thinking, problem-solving and effective communication in the radiology field. Students also learn to practice within the ethical, professional and legal boundaries required of this profession. The didactic portion is comprised of classes on SCC’s Lincoln Campus or online. The clinical component involves on-site education at pre-approved hospitals and clinics in the student’s vicinity. Program graduates become eligible to take the national examination of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and apply for state licensure.

The primary mission of the Southeast Community College Radiologic Technology Program is to prepare entry level Radiologic Technologists educated in patient care and radiation safety and committed to applying learned skills within the ethical, professional, and legal boundaries of a diverse community.

Radiologic Science

Radiologic science is a branch of medicine that deals with the creation of detailed images of the internal structures of the human body for the purpose of diagnosing disease, and to a lesser extent, administering therapeutic treatments.

Before 1972, what was commonly called radiology was generally limited to examinations of the skeletal system, the digestive tract and the vessels of the circulatory system. The organs of the digestive tract and blood vessels could only be seen under x-ray examination with the aid of a substance introduced into them. For the digestive tract, the element barium, mixed with water, is used. For blood vessels, an iodine preparation is injected directly into an artery or vein.
