The Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry offers graduate research in pure science, engineering fundamentals, and engineering applications. Graduate programs lead to the degrees of Master of Applied Science (MASc), Master of Engineering (MEng), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The MEng program differs from the MASc and PhD programs in that it is oriented to learning through prescribed courses rather than through research.

The Department attracts a dynamic professorial staff with outstanding international reputations. Many graduate students work closely with industrial partners during their studies. Research is funded by the government and industry, often by means of a consortium of companies. The experience of dealing with real world problems prepares graduates for successful professional careers.

Municipal and industrial wastewater has received considerable attention of research and engineering, since it touches the daily life of all populations. Securing a safe, reliable source of potable water is an ever growing challenge for governmental and professional agencies, where daily demand is growing and yet more complex issues are evolving with the daily use of more chemicals and materials. It is important for people involved in water business to get first hand understanding of the complex issues related to water and wastewater. Recently, with the extensive consumption of pharmaceutical drugs and excessive usage of electronic gadgets, more risks are posed to the environment and water supplies. It is the duty of everyone involved to ensure that the public at large are receiving healthy water for daily use. That comes from the fundamental understanding of processes and technology used in water and wastewater treatment.

Objective
The course takes a step-by-step approach to analyze and understand the issues related to water and wastewater treatment. Water and wastewater treatment is the process of removing contaminants from wastewater, and includes physical, chemical and biological removal processes. Water and Wastewater Treatment: An Introduction is a course that introduces the problem-solving concepts and tools commonly used in environmental engineering, present the fundamental operations and processes that are used in environmental engineering, with a focus on water and wastewater treatment processes, and instills knowledge essential for basic understanding of environmental systems. The topics covered include an introduction to environmental engineering and environmental systems, materials and energy balances, reactors, hydraulic characteristics, and flow regimes, water use trends and projections, water chemistry concepts, water constituents and quality standards, and a review of physical, chemical, and biological treatment options.

Food Chemistry is a course that course explains water, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins and minerals in foods with reference to nutrition, quality and safety. It also explains how enzymes, food additives (i.e. pigments and flavors) and texture are changed or altered during food processing.

Course Outcome

After completion of Food Chemistry, students will be equipped with a basic understanding of the following:

How to use the basic language of food chemistry competently and provide real examples as illustrations of the terms
How to recognize in real examples the underlying mechanisms responsible for food functionality and be able to use their knowledge of Food Chemistry the important control points and consequences.
Recommended Prerequisites

This course is an intended for people working in the preparation, production, or sale of food.
