Respiratory Care

The Respiratory Care program is a six-quarter (18-month) program. Students in the program complete a comprehensive curriculum in patient assessment, treatment, management control, diagnostic evaluation, and the care of patients with lung or heart problems. Supervised clinical practice at local hospitals and health centers give students practice in common procedures such as administering medical gases, aerosols and inhaled medications, applying ventilatory support, and testing techniques used in diagnosis, monitoring and treatment. Clinical practice for the program is provided in cooperation with a variety of health care facilities throughout the region. The program offers classroom, laboratory and clinical instruction for traditional classes. Respiratory therapists are employed in a variety of settings, including hospitals, home care, rehabilitation facilities, skilled nursing facilities, physician&,#146,s offices, diagnostic and research labs, sleep labs, and educational institutions. Respiratory Care Degree Completion

Our degree completion program offers you continuing education in your profession, advancement or new options in your career, and the bachelor’s degree required for entry into master’s degree programs. Many of our students go on to advanced degrees in business, education and more.

You will begin the program with a foundation for degree completion built upon two sources: credit you complete at another college and transfer to Oregon Tech and credit granted for professional registries. For example, 81 credits are granted for RRT credentials. After evaluating your credits and credentials, we work with you to develop an individualized plan to complete your program requirements.

Who is Eligible?
1.You must have an associate degree from a CoARC accredited Respiratory Care program.
2.You must be employed by a properly equipped respiratory care facility.
3.You must achieve the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) prior to graduation from this program. (Note: Many students hold this credential prior to admission.)
4.You must meet the Oregon Tech admissions criteria. Special admissions arrangements are also available.

The Respiratory Care Practitioner Program is designed to train certified and registered therapists in the care of patients with respiratory problems. Students are instructed in the basic sciences, cardiopulmonary physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, mechanical ventilation and provided clinical experience. The student will be CRT & RRT eligible after completion of both the Community College and Pickens Technical College components. The graduate will be eligible to take the NBRC, Certified Respiratory Therapist Exam (CRT) and Registered Respiratory Therapist Exams (RRT). Applicants must be physically able to exert up to twenty-five pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Program attendance requires the ability to perceive attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by means of receptors in skin, particularly those in the fingertips. Must have the ability to discriminate and perceive differences in breath sounds and heart tones. Also, must be able to differentiate multiple skin and tissue colors.
