'' Anti-Money Laundering Best Practices for the Life Insurance Industry provides guidance to insurance companies on building anti-money laundering programs that comply with regulations and addresses the risks they face from money launderers and terrorists. The course introduces the relevant legislation, including the Bank Security Act, the Money Laundering Control Act, the Money Laundering Suppression Act, and the Patriot Act. Then the course describes the money laundering process and the points in that process at which the insurance industry is most vulnerable.
The heart of the course details the requirements for a formal anti-money laundering program for insurance companies, including requirements related to the adoption of policies, procedures, and internal controls that reflect the insurer¡¯s own assessment of the money laundering risks associated with its products, customers, distribution channels, and geographic locations; designation of a compliance officer for the anti-money laundering program who will be responsible for making sure the program is implemented effectively and upgraded when necessary, and the employees and other receive appropriate training; provisions of an ongoing education and training program on staff compliance responsibilities; and conduct of an independent audit of the program on a periodic basis.
The course also addresses the following additional integral components of an insurance company¡¯s anti-money laundering program: the identification and verification of customers¡¯ identities and the identification and reporting of suspicious activities.
