In this course, we review how Ethernet has grown over the last 30 years and the basic Ethernet standards. We discuss how a network uses the media access control (MAC) address to move data, the function of a network interface card (NIC) in Ethernet communications, the different types of physical media available for Ethernet networks, and the differences between the various specifications of Ethernet media including: copper, shortwave fiber, and long wave fiber. We discuss the physical and logical topologies used in today’s Ethernet networks, how traffic moves through an Ethernet network from source to destination devices, and how Ethernet networks resolve collisions. We discuss the role of a repeater within an Ethernet network and the difference between Broadcast, Multicast and Unicast operation in the network. You learn which fields are in a basic Ethernet frame and their role in Ethernet communication, what happens in the Data Link layer, what happens in the Physical layer, and the difference in frame structure between Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet. You learn how auto-negotiation and auto-sense are used to accommodate different network speeds, the purpose and use of Power over Ethernet (PoE) in today’s Ethernet networks, the PoE IEEE 802.3af specification, and finally, the typical implementation of PoE and the implications on previously installed Ethernet networks ...''
