Course Description:
'' The school of Italian language and culture for foreigners offers instruction at three centers. In Florence, lessons take place in the shadow of Brunelleschis great Dome. The school also has branches in Siena near the Piazza del Campo, and in Rome in a typical 17th century aristocratic palace in the Piazza dellOrologio.
Many different types of students attend receive lessons at the three centers, with sixty percent of students aged between 17 and 30, seeking to improve their Italian language skills and awareness of Italian culture. Sixty percent of the students are already working; about ten percent are business managers and executives of different nationalities. Five percent are retired and wish to improve their Italian and familiarize themselves with Italian culture.
All teachers are highly qualified, most of them have studied Italian language and literature, and all have been specially trained in teaching Italian to foreigners.
Although summer in Italy, from the Alps to Sicily, is quite warm, the winter in Northern and Central Italy can be quite cool. Winter in the south, however, is relatively mild. The best weather in the cities is in spring and autumn. Average summer temperatures range from 18°C to 30°C (64°F to 86°F), the average winter temperature is around 4°C to 16°C (39°F to 61°F).
Siena has an abundance of artistic and historical points of interest. There is the wonderful Piazza del Campo, in the form of a shell, dominated by the Gothic Public Palace, containing masterpieces by Simone Marini and Lorenzetti and the slender Torre del Mangia. No less important is the group by Duomo and Baptistery: the Cathedral proudly presents great works of art such as the Pulpit by Nicla Pisano. The adjoining museum preserves the "Maesta," a famous painting by Duccio di Buoninsegna.
Churches, palaces and museums abound in Siena. The Gothic Basilica of San Domenico; the Salimbeni Palace; the church of Saint Francis with frescoes by Lorenzetti; the superb Palazzo Tolomei; Santa Maria dei Servi, in a romantically isolated position with many precious paintings; the rich Art Gallery in Palazzo Bonsignori and the Archaeological and Etruscan Museum. Siena is a charming medieval city filled with interesting architecture and friendly people and the school is located in the historical centre. ...''
