Course Description:

'' The school was founded in Siena in 1979. Since that time, the school has been welcoming students of a wide range of nationalities and all ages to study language, art and culture in the centre of this charming medieval city. The school represents the Siena Committee of the nonprofit making cultural organization Società Dante Alighieri, founded in Rome in 1889 with the aim of promoting and sustaining the knowledge of Italian language and culture throughout the world. All students attending the school for at least four weeks automatically receive free membership of the Society and benefit from the numerous advantages that it offers, both in Italy and abroad.

Dante Alighieri is also recognized by the European Consortium as an examination centre for the PLIDA (Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri) exam at various levels of knowledge.

Teachers are all native Italian speakers, are highly qualified, university graduates and are specially trained to teach foreigners. All teachers attend a teacher-training course organized by the Director of Studies before teaching at the school. Each teacher specializes in an area of Italian Culture, such as History of Art, Literature, Theatre or Music.


The school is just 10 minutes walk away from the spectacular Piazza del Campo, situated on three floors of a beautiful old building in the heart of the oldest part of Siena, Castelvecchio (old castle). This area was in fact a Roman castle, now the home of some picturesque alleyways and restaurants.

The school boasts three terraces and two courtyards, one of which houses the cafeteria, where the students can go to relax during classes, as well as the comfortable common room. The building is very characteristic, with its 20 varying classrooms with high ceilings and much light, and the beautiful self-study library with a breath-taking view over the Tuscan hills.


Siena is a city of contrasts, from the medieval treasures to be found within its city walls to the modern shops and facilities to be found all around the city; from the calm and tranquillity of the hidden back streets to the hectic Palio preparations, race and celebrations which go on in the main squares for over half a year. It is a small city but has a large student population (of both Italians and foreigners), meaning that there are plenty of places to go and things to do in your free time - from bars and clubs to restaurants and pizzerias; from theatres and cinemas to museums and art galleries.
