'' The SEC, established in 1991, is situated in the heart of Santander. Only the most experienced language teachers are employed and the most up-to-date methods used. All course materials are supplied. The student is encouraged to participate in the social and cultural activities which are organized by the school so as to enhance the learning experience and gain insight into Spain and its people.
Santanders charm lies in its unbeatable natural setting and its international, cosmopolitan atmosphere. Nine beaches run along the Santander shore - all with fine, white sand distinctive of this stretch of northern coastline. One of the beaches is called Bikinis, since it was here that the first bikinis, worn by young women attending courses at the summer university, were sighted on Santander beaches back in the sixties. Around 200,000 people live in Santander. As the capital of the Autonomous Community of Cantabria, Santander is the administrative and commercial center of the region. It is the only port in the entire peninsula which currently has links with the United Kingdom; there is regular ferry service between the two. The citys lively nightlife centres around the Calle Santa Lucía, and in the day the beach at El Sardinero, popular with surfers, can be enjoyed.
Southwest of the town are the Altamira Caves, containing prehistoric paintings believed to be 14,000 years old. The cave, discovered by a hunter in 1868, was visited in 1875 by Marcelino de Sautuola, a nobleman from Santander, who found animal bones and flint implements there. Sautuola returned in the summer of 1879 and on one visit was accompanied by his little daughter Maria; it was she who first noticed paintings of bulls (actually bison) on the ceiling. ...''
