'' This is a comprehensive course that first considers the process used to design educational technology products. Next, a careful analysis will be made of the various elements of design including opportunities to analyze and evaluate actual developed products. Students will examine media-based instructional materials and evaluate their effectiveness in learning environments. Emphasis will be placed on best practices that utilize modern technologies.

The Planning Process for Classroom Use of Media and Technology
Differentiate between learning and instruction. Examine dominant psychological learning theories and their impact on the use of technology. Describe the basic categories of media. Compare and contrast the roles of media in learning. Relate instructional methods to the use of a variety of media. Analyze the steps involved in the systematic planning for the use of media and technology. Evaluate selected lesson plan objectives on the basis of audience, behavior, conditions, and degree. Describe instructional applications that are appropriate for manipulatives. Locate sources of virtual field trips on the Internet. Compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of printed materials in enhancing student learning. Examine sources of free and inexpensive materials. Describe ways of displaying visuals in a classroom. Evaluate the effectiveness of selected printed materials using an appraisal checklist. Visual Design Principles and Visuals
Describe the roles that visuals play in instruction. Compare and contrast decoding and encoding as methods of developing visual literacy. Examine elements of effective visual design. Relate visual planning tools to the visual design process. Identify common types of nonprojected visuals and their use in the instructional setting. Analyze the advantages and limitations of common means of projected visuals used in the educational environment. Describe the characteristics of a wide area network (WAN). Analyze the advantages and limitations of a local area network (LAN). Identify the instructional application of an Intranet. Examine issues relating to selecting, installing and maintaining networks for schools and/or school districts. Participate in a field-based activity involving WAN/LAN or wireless systems. Create a multimedia presentation integrating multiple types of data using advanced features of a presentation tool.
