'' Petrarch is mostly known to the 21st century reader for the poems celebrating his long and hopeless fidelity to Laura, a married woman who many believed had been no more than a figment of the poets imagination. Yet Petrarch was also the first modern man, the father of humanism, the lover of the classics, a traveler, a mountain climber, a man of insatiable intellectual curiosity with opinions on everything: from music to medicine to gardening. In this course we look at Petrarch in the context of his time and the world he lived in, and familiarize ourselves with some of his poems and his extraordinary correspondence. ...''
