Training Course:

Mountain Instructor - Rocky Mountain

School/Trainer:

National Outdoor Leadership School
Riverton, Wyoming, United States

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' The Wind River mountain range is the place Paul Petzoldt chose for the first NOLS course more than 40 years ago, and we have trained instructors here ever since. Your Rocky Mountain Instructor Course will build on the technical outdoor skills you already have, while allowing you to fine-tune your teaching skills through an in-depth examination of the NOLS curriculum. The course is typically broken up into two sections: one backcountry section focused on backpacking and a climbing camp focused on traditional climbing. The July Instructor Course combines the two sections into one long backcountry expedition.

Backpacking
The Winds offer spectacular backpacking, and you’ll see this amazing terrain on the first section of your course. You won’t just be a student, though; while you and your coursemates will be learning from your instructors, you’ll also be doing a fair amount of the teaching on this course. Depending on weather conditions and your group’s ability, you may do some alpine mountaineering during this section as well. It’s our goal that you finish this course ready to take students into the backcountry safely and responsibly.

Climbing
Wyoming’s abundant granite, sandstone, and limestone climbing locations give this course many options when it is time for the rock camp. You’ll have no shortage of excellent climbing, whether your course is in the foothills of the Winds at Sinks Canyon or on the high desert plains at Split Rock or Lankin Dome. Climbing is an important component of the NOLS curriculum, though it should be noted that it is not necessary to be a climber to have a successful NOLS career. Anchor building, top rope site management, and multi-pitch climbing will all be taught while your skills are evaluated at climbing camp.
