Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Master Degree)

School/Trainer:

Monterey Institute of International Studies
Monterey, California, United States

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' The 37-unit MATESOL degree program is distinguished for its solid foundation in the fields of linguistics, language pedagogy and applied linguistics research. Students receive training in a broad range of topics important to the development of language education professionals. An example of one of the required program courses which incorporates a broad understanding of these fields is Structure of English.

The Structure of English seminar examines the grammar of spoken and written English, focusing on how English grammar functions in authentic discourse. Current research on the topic is discussed during the seminar while students are asked to consider the role of English grammar in classroom instruction. As part of the course students review and create materials for English grammar instruction, combining the theoretical with the practical.

Another feature of the program is the project work completed by students throughout their program of study. Every course requires students to complete one or more projects as a means of academic and professional growth and for course evaluation. An example of such a project is the original language assessment tool created in the Language Assessment seminar. Students are required to develop an assessment tool for a real student population, then administer the test with the population and, afterwords, determine the strengths and weaknesses of the test. Finally, the student must write and present an in-depth report on the assessment tool, including descriptive and statistical analysis.

The MATESOL program at the Monterey Institute is proud to be commonly cited among the top TESOL programs in the US. The faculty, alumni, and students are known for their dedication and excellence in the field. Monterey Institute faculty and alumni serve as leaders on local, national or the international TESOL organization boards and committees, in addition to their full time work as instructors, administrators, language assessment professionals, and so on.

MATESOL alumni work throughout the US and in many countries abroad, including such places as Kigali, Rwanda; Osijek, Croatia; Managua, Nicaragua; Seoul, Korea and Nagoya, Japan. Most MATESOL alumni spend time working in the US and abroad throughout their careers completing short and long-term assignments in a variety of fields and positions around the world.

The MATESOL program at the Monterey Institute successfully prepares individuals for doctoral studies. Many MATESOL alumni have attained a doctoral degree or are currently enrolled in doctoral programs at such prestigious institutions as Harvard, Oxford University and Georgetown ...''
