'' This course presents the concepts of financial accounting important to the understanding of the financial environment of the health care industry. Students interpret financial statements, prepare analyses of financial data necessary to make decisions, describe the different third party payment methods, experiment with cost finding and price setting, and conduct break-even analyses. The course provides students with experience in capital and operating budgets, financial forecasts, and business plan preparation. Students will be expected to expand their utilization of spreadsheet applications.
Topics and Objectives
Financial Environment of Health Services Industry
Examine the evolution of the global health care financial structure, policy, the multiple payment systems, the participants and their roles, and the market systems. Distinguish between financial and service orientation models. Accounting Principles and Financial Statement Analysis
Define Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the conventions that modify the principles, including the ethical applications. Evaluate the composition and use of the balance sheet, statement of revenues and expenses, statement of cash flows, and statement of changes in unrestricted net assets. Assess strategic financial performance of an organization through the use of commonly recognized financial analysis. Delivery Models
Explore delivery models, and project the impact on future models and health care professionals. Assess the relationship between delivery models and financial management. Examine different purchasers/payers of health care services and their impact. Management Control Processes of Budgeting and Capital Project Analysis
Examine the steps followed in the budget process, including statistics estimates, expense budget, productivity, flexible versus static budget, rate setting, and profit levels. Analyze budget performance, evaluate the impact, and propose corrective actions. Analyze the capital asset acquisition and funding process. Managerial Accounting
Examine various means of defining costs and the methods of classifying and measuring operating costs by expense area. Analyze the concepts of break-even analysis in traditional and multiple payer models, and pricing of new services. Analyze the cost measurement process and its integration into the operating budget, cost reporting, and variance analysis. Program Development and Financial Plan
Develop programs that provide solutions to todays health care problems. Examine the implementation process for a new program. Integrate the financial aspects of new program development into the overall strategic plan for a successful business. ...''
