'' This programme is a major in Chinese. Upon graduation, candidates will be conferred with Bachelor of Language and Linguistics degree.
Chinese is the most spoken language in the world with over a billion speakers worldwide. However, the language is also known for its high level of internal diversity. Regional variations between the various dialects are different enough to be incomprehensible even to native Chinese speakers. Mandarin is by far the most spoken dialect with an estimated 800 million speakers. Wu and Cantonese are second and third respectively, with 90 and 80 million speakers each. Chinese (Standard Mandarin) is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.
With the opening of Chinas doors to international trade, the need for Chinese language experts has increased. Additionally, in countries where Chinese forms a major part of society, without being the official language of that country, it is important for the continued exploration, education and evolution of the language.
This is a 3-year degree programme. At the end of their study, candidates will be conferred the degree Bachelor of Languages and Linguistics. ...''
