as the course is self-paced, the student is free to consume it at his own speed but experience has shown that for best results the process, from chapter 1 to passing the final exam, should not take more than a month. as a point of reference, an average student working full-time on the course content will take between 16-20 hours to finish it.

1. rdb: jpa/hibernate is about accessing relational databases from the oo world. this chapter makes sure the student has the necessary knowledge of the relational world. key concepts such as5?, column, primary key and foreign key are reviewed there.
2. jdbc: hibernate is built on top of jdbc. this chapter grounds the student in the basics of jdbc.
3. hello world: a first encounter with jpa proper that shows all the components to put together in order to make it work. in this chapter the student discovers the setup and configuration elements.
4. concepts: this chapter is about understanding the need for jpa and the fundamental differences between the oo world and the relational world such as granularity, subtypes, identity, associations and navigation.
5. entity: the student learns how classes are mapped to relational5?s and the main annotations used to do so.
6. relationships: this chapter shows the student how to build a graph of persisted objects by establishing uni- and bi-directional relationships between entities.
7. lifecycle: the lifecycle chapter describes how and when the state of in-memory objects is propagated to the database. we also discuss the different states entities go through and how to deal with ’,detached’,
8. fetching strategies: manipulating huge graphs of objects can lead to performance problems. this chapter shows the student various fetching strategies to improve application performance.
9. query language: jpa is not only about saving objects to the datastore but also retrieving them, the jpa-ql language was designed as an oo version of sql.
10. dao: an introduction to the widespread data access object pattern, used to isolate core domain logic from database communication details.
11. query language - intermediate: some more advanced aspects of jpa-ql ...''
