Course Description:
'' Being able to recognise and evaluate what you are dealing with is an essential pre-requisite for anyone involved in the conservation of historic buildings. Subtle differences in detail can differentiate an early eighteenth century window from a mid nineteenth century one, or even a medieval building from a Victorian Revival one. These differences however can have a major effect on the type of statutory protection appropriate, the availability of funding for conservation work, or the monetary value of a building.
Course Objectives: To enable course participants to identify domestic building work and building features from different historical periods in England and Wales up to 1900, and hence to estimate the dates of the original construction of historic buildings and subsequent alterations.
Course Outline: Historical development of the following building elements from the early middle ages to the end of the nineteenth century:
The complexity of the historical development of smaller historic houses House plan form and overall three-dimensional form Wall construction: timber frame and masonry Development of roof structure and finishes Windows and doors Fireplaces and chimneys Staircases Analysis of examples of smaller historic houses.
