Course Description:
'' The way in which building conservation professionals think, especially those responsible for giving or withholding statutory consents or grant aid, is often puzzling to those not familiar with the various conservation philosophies and sets of principles. This course attempts to unravel some of the mystery and provide course participants with an insight into building conservation thinking and its impact on the processing of statutory consents and funding applications.
Course Objectives: to develop an understanding of the development of building conservation philosophy from the late 19th century to the present day. to develop an understanding of the current philosophies and principles of some of the more important building conservation organisations. to consider the impact of these philosphies and principles on the processing of applications for statutory consents and funding for building conservation work.
Course Outline: the effect of nineteenth century restorers on the built heritage of England and Wales. William Morris and the Society or the Protection of Ancient Buildings. The Venice and Burra Charters Current building conservation principles: Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, BS 7913, English Heritage. Implications of the various philosophies and sets of principles for repair, restoration, change of use and alteration of historic buildings ...''
