Course Description:

'' This is a drainage design course aimed at new graduate engineers. It will provide the basis for the design of foul and surface water sewerage systems.

Course Objectives:
At the end of the course the delegate should:

Be able to estimate flows in foul and surface water sewer systems
Be able to design sewers in section and size the pipework.
Be able to design the sewerage system in plan and position manholes intelligently.
Be aware of safety considerations including CDM requirements.
Be aware of the principles of sewerage design.

Course Outline:
Historical context of sewerage and the legislation that drives it.
Sources of urban drainage flows - surface runoff, foul sewage, trade effluent, and others?
Urban drainage systems - separate, combined, and "partially separate", SuDS
Estimating foul flows; sources of flows; DWF; peaking factors. Practical exercise.
Sizing sewers - hydraulic calculations and use of HR tables/charts; practical exercise.
Estimating Surface Water flows; Modified Rational Method; Computer based systems; hydrograph methods.
Designing to Sewers for Adoption; basis of flows; layout; adoptable sewers.
Attenuation systems; design requirements.
Wide and narrow trenches; pipe strength calculations.
Sewer maintenance; sewer rehabilitation systems.
