Course Description:

'' The delivery of SUDS to meet current design guidance and the aspirations of the planning process

SUDS is now a requirement in the Dublin area and is increasingly being asked for by Local Authorities in other parts of Ireland. There has been a slow uptake of this new approach to managing rainfall and where it has been used the design results have often been disappointing to planners.

Recent outcomes from training programmes and advice from planners has highlighted the need for a deeper understanding of SUDS and the mechanisms available to the planning process to ensure that SUDS objectives are realised in development.

The proposed course considers the following elements in planning for Sustainable Drainage Systems or SUDS:

An understanding of the reasons for SUDS and a clear explanation of the principles and practice of SUDS including the benefits inherent in the SUDS approach to managing rainfall on development.
Designing SUDS, design criteria, technique selection and integration into site layout.
The planning sequence for SUDS design set out in current guidance, The Greater Dublin Strategic Drainage Study, and an explanation of design criteria and how these can be incorporated in development briefs.
Management of SUDS and how design affects maintenance and whole life design.
Current concerns regarding the adoption and management issues will be discussed in the context of the role Local Authorities can take in facilitating SUDS and removing perceived barriers for developers and site managers.

The course will use examples and case studies from current SUDS schemes, including housing, and draw on experience from planning studies in Scotland (DEX review), the FLOWS project in Cambridgeshire (demonstrating best practice in areas subject to flood risk) and other SUDS projects.

The course will refer to The SUDS Manual CIRIA 697 and some of the new considerations set out in the manual, which is similar to The Greater Dublin Strategic Drainage Study.

It is assumed that local requirements and legislation will be familiar with delegates.
