Course Description:

'' Growth in traffic & its attendant problems throughout the UK has brought increasingly widespread recognition of the importance of highway maintenance, and the high value placed on it both by users and the wider community. There is also an increasing understanding of the serious consequences of failure to invest adequately and effectively in maintaining the local highway network, in particular the progressive deterioration of safety, reliability, and quality, eventually requiring even greater levels of investment in the future.

Aims and Objectives:
The course builds on the report of Dr. A.H. Marshall’s 1970 committee recommendations, the 1989 Code of Practice for Highway Maintenance and it’s 2005 successor "Well Maintained Highways". It is intended as a review of current good practice, an aid to those seeking to update established procedures and to those wishing to increase their knowledge of the subject.

Learning outcomes:
On completion of the course, the delegates will:

Be aware of current practice and related standards for the effective management and maintenance of public highways.
Have a greater awareness of the statutory duties and powers of highway authorities and the necessary policies and practice, which mitigate against public liability claims.
