Training Course:Managing Non-Native SpeakersSchool/Trainer:Symmons Madge Associates Ltd. Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Dublin, Exeter, Glasgow, Slough, United Kingdom
Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online/Live | On-site/In-house | Blended | Self-paced
Course Description:
'' This course is designed to assist line-managers who have to "mentor non-English as first language" colleagues. Because engineering organisations now recruit graduate engineers from all over the world, line-managers, Supervising Civil Engineers and Delegated Engineers can find themselves spending a great deal of time re-writing or correcting the written and spoken English of non-native speakers. It is often easy to know when English is inaccurate and poorly expressed, but more difficult to explain why, and show how to correct it.
This one-day training revisits basic grammar and tense usage, and identifies some of the key problems faced by non-native speakers in the workplace, both grammatical and cultural.
Learning Outcomes: This course will equip delegates to manage non-native speakers more effectively and to provide confident and appropriate language support from a sound grammatical base.
Aims and Objectives: On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:
Identify tenses and know how and when each is used Explain basic grammatical structures to non-native speakers Be able to review a report written by a non-native speaker and offer well-informed comments Recognise how to modify their own spoken English to be understood better Use a range of techniques to support non-native speakers in their ongoing language learning Appreciate cultural differences and the effects of these on language and perception Understand some of the wider issues faced by staff working outside their own culture
Course Outline: Grammar basics Recognising and using tenses Error recognition and report review Correcting English without giving offence British politeness and its implications Saying what you mean Avoiding idiom and phrasal verbs Awareness of differing language cultures Day-to-day support in the workplace Where to find appropriate resources Wider issues facing non-native staff ...''
