'' There are two elements to this 2 day training course:

Improving skills in facilitation for group decision support

Facilitating the development of Project Briefs
Projects achieve their goals through the collaborative efforts of many people and organisations, facilitated by Project Managers. Project Managers are routinely required to lead groups in problem solving and decision making. This may involve their own team or wider groups of stakeholders in a project. Those Project Managers with good facilitation skills will achieve improved group understanding, early identification of problems and issues and speedier action in delivering their projects. Furthermore, those skills are likely to reflect in better management of people more generally.

A clear and comprehensive brief is the starting point for effective development and delivery of projects. This must interpret and expand the Client’s Brief and Business Case to describe succinctly all those functions necessary to achieve the project. Within the Client Brief there may be conflicting requirements and interpretations of relative priorities. Resolution of these and many other conflicts within the project is ultimately the responsibility of the relevant stakeholders, but it falls to the Project Manager to facilitate the process and achieve a Brief, supported by all.

Course Objectives:
This course aims to improve the effectiveness of Project Managers by
enhancing their skills in the planning and leading of group decision making, and then applying those skills to develop improved project briefs. The emphasis will therefore be on using facilitation tools to support groups in identifying, clarifying and analysing problems, understanding projects in function terms, creative thinking and decision making. The approach used draws upon the methodology of Value Management, described in BS:EN 12973: 2000.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this course, delegates will understand the scope of facilitation in project decision making and have developed skills in:

Planning and leading a facilitated meeting (for an employer’s project)
Problem analysis
Creativity
Decision making
Achieving consensus
Developing a Project Brief
