'' A one day course addressing the basic principles of estimating for construction work on a building contract, identifying the function and role of an estimator together with a step by step analysis of how to collate information and prepare rates, prices and tenders from 1st principles.
Aim: To enable delegates to obtain an appreciation of the basic principles of estimating for construction work on a building contract.
Course Objectives: To enable delegates to:-
Appreciate the role and function of an estimator Understand the constituent elements of a tender Know how labour, plant and material resources are priced Recognise the role and purpose of dayworks Identify how to procure and manage subcontractors tenders for incorporation into the contractors tender Be aware of how overheads are priced and included in tenders See how typical rates are calculated Draw together the constituent elements of an estimate and convert it to a tender
Course Outline: Session 1 An introduction to Estimating
Tender opportunities, the key role of the estimator, estimates and tenders (definitions) and styles of contract.
Session 2 Elements of a tender
Labour, plant, materials, subcontractors, prime cost and provisional sums, preliminaries, overheads, profit and contingencies
Session 3 Labour
Types of labour cost, constituent elements, calculating an all-inclusive labour rate, adjusting the rates for charge-hand supervision, overtime, summer/winter working, gang and squad rates and outputs.
Session 4 Material and Plant costs
Enquiries to suppliers, constituent elements and pricing materials, etc. Procurement, plant costs and outputs, etc.
Session 5 Daywork
BQ items, daywork schedules for labour and plant, % uplifts, etc.
Session 6 Subcontractors
Enquiries to subcontractors, checking quotes, etc.
Session 7 Overheads
Site and head-office overheads, items to be included, methods of calculation and inclusion in the price.
Session 8 Typical rate analysis
Typical analysis of calculating rates and prices for individual trade items.
