Training Course:Sheet Piles and CofferdamsSchool/Trainer:Symmons Madge Associates Ltd. Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Dublin, Exeter, Glasgow, Slough, United Kingdom
Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online/Live | On-site/In-house | Blended | Self-paced
Course Description:
'' Temporary works incurs a significant portion of the cost of a civil engineering or building project, and is potentially the most dangerous element. It is therefore essential that proper attention be paid to the economic design, construction and safety aspects of these works. This course has equal time devoted to conceptual and detail design, and to installation, whilst health and safety is infused throughout. Alternatives to sheet piling are also discussed. The design method taught complies with Eurocode EN3-5 and is based on British Standard 8002, and CIRIA C580, which are updates of the simple process used successfully for the last 65 years. This can be used for manual calculations and for checking more complex computer-based designs, and is also available itself as software. The lectures will be consolidated by short tutorials, so participants will need calculators.
The simple principles of installation and extraction will be explained, together with numerous practical hints based on the lecturers 30 years experience. The main types of plant and equipment will be covered, as will the adaptation of the principles of safe trenching.
Safety measures and legal requirements relating to design as well as construction are included in all the relevant modules during the course. Sources of information, alternative design methods, and cost and outputs are also given.
Course Objectives:
At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:
Recognise the common methods used to support ground, with particular knowledge of the safe construction of sheet pile structures and cofferdams. Calculate the loads imposed on such structures in compliance with the Eurocode. Identify the factors to be considered for a safe and economic design. Supervise the safe and economic construction of a sheet pile structure or cofferdam. Be able to do simple sheet pile designs by hand, and use these to check computer designs. Identify the techniques for the design and safe construction of complicated layouts. Relate the practical aspects of sheet piling to design. ...''
